The most controversial general in the war was Sir Douglas Haig. Haig was born on June 1 1861 in Edinburgh. His studies led him first to Brasenose College in Oxford and then to Royal Military Academy in 1884. A year after completing Sandburst he joined the 7th Hussars for nine years as a cavalry officer, which took him to India. Haig's credentials also include taking part in the Omdurman campaign and the Second Boer war. He then became the Director of Military Training in 1906, which entailed being responsible for the assembly of the British Expeditionary Force in case of war with Germany. After three years he was awarded the position of Chief of Staff of the Indian army. When World War ll broke out in August 1914, Haig was in command of the 1st Army Corps in his BEF.
