Populists and Progressives
Summary: A brief look at Populism and Progressivism in in the United States during the late 1800s and early 1900s. While the Populists had reached their height in the 1896 election, Progressives eventually had greater success because they had more money, a larger number of professionals within their ranks, and influence within both major political parties at that time.
In the election of 1896 the populists had been at their height. They had wanted many reforms, inflation, less monopolies, railroads, and a lower tariff however, they failed to achieve any of these. The progressive party had success in all of this and more. Part of the reason for the success was in the party membership of the progressives. The progressives had money, and were primarily professionals such as doctors and lawyers and presidents such as Wilson and TR. The populists were made up of farmers, green backers, miners, and old knights of labor. They were also a 3rd party with no money and no political experience. The progressives were in both major political parties and were class professionals. There were many reasons why the populists failed and the progressives succeeded.
