Spies, by Michael Frayn is a wonderful novel with many elements of excitement and mystery. It is very intriguing and the characters are presented with much talent from the author. Keith and Stephen are two characters that are very much in contrast to one another. Spies is a multigeneric novel that looks deep into the past of Stephen Wheatly as a child. Using his memory and evocative smells Stephens childhood is portrayed to the reader creating a story of magnificence.
In the first chapter Stephen's past is conveyed to us as a foreign country through a mental and physical journey. Stephan returns to his childhood home to put his past to rest and filter out his fondest memories. A picture is painted for the reader of what Stephen's life use to be like.
