Civil Rights in the Jim Crow South

Summary: An overview of the Civil Rights Cases, which revolved around the Civil Rights Act of 1875, and the Plessy v. Ferguson case (1896). Both these cases created a foundation for the expansion of segregation in the South in the years following emancipation and in the wake of Jim Crow laws.
In the first 15-20 years after emancipation blacks were given more opportunities, yet they were still held back by the Jim Crow laws. Whites still did not respect blacks, and although they said they were equal, whites believed that they would always be ahead of the blacks and more important. The Civil Rights Cases and the Plessy v. Ferguson case both created a foundation for the expansion of segregation in the South. The Civil Rights Cases were born through a number of cases involving application to the federal law. Theses cases were collected and presented to the Supreme Court as the Civil Rights Cases. The Civil Rights Cases were based around the Civil Rights Act of 1875. The Civil Rights Act of 1875 confirmed the equality of all people in transportation facilities, hotels, theaters and many other public facilities.
