Welfare `amendments' (`1832-1948) Address the Problem of Poverty
Summary: Welfare Amendments introduced by successive governments unquestionably addressed the problem of poverty. First of all there was the Poor Law Amendment Act. Towards the end up of 19th century, various public health and education acts were passed. Not only did this improve housing conditions but it had a major impact on the health of the working class.
From 1832 - 1948 successive governments introduced a series of Welfare `Amendments' which undoubtedly addressed the problem of poverty. This can be proved by analysing 4 significant periods between these times. First of all there was the Poor Law Amendment Act which was introduced by the Whig government. This was designed to investigate in which poor relief was being granted. The later 19th century saw the introduction of various Public Health Acts by the Conservative government. These had a great impact on poverty as it improved housing and public health. In 1908 the Liberals introduced a series of acts that tackled the old, the sick and the hungry. Although it was successful it only laid the foundations in which the Labour government successfully built on in the mid 20th century by introducing such successful acts that it led to the creation of the welfare state.
