Romeo and Juliet: Luhrmann and Zeffirelli
Summary: Comparison of two film versions of William Shakespeare's "Romeo and Juliet" by Baz Luhrmann and Franco Zeffirelli. Zeffirelli's retelling is very traditional and sticks to Shakespeare's words. Luhrmann's version is more of a unique interpretation.
Shakespeare's Romeo and Juliet is one of Shakespeare's most interesting and well-known plays. For this reason many attempts have been made, by a variety of directors, to interpret and present the Bard's tale in their own creative, original and unique way. The two directors who have succeeded most are Franco Zeffirelli and Baz Luhrmann. For those who are not aware, Romeo and Juliet tells the tale of two "star-crossed", teenage lovers who secretly fall in love for each other and marry. Their families, the Montagues and Capulets, have been fierce enemies for decades. In the end, their love is doomed. Using this as their basis, the two directors take a very different approach in portraying the play; Zeffirelli acquiring a more traditional ambience, whereas Luhrmann attempts to thrill his audience with a more modern setting.
