Relationship Positions in the End of Something
Summary: This essay discusses the position in the relationship of both Nick and Marjorie in the short story, "The End of Something" by Ernest Hemingway.
Usually, when something comes to an end, it is not because it was bound to happen or because the end is always near or because of any other cliché that tails closely along behind a relationship until it falls over the edge. I believe that when a relationship ends, it is because the weaker person in it has decided it is going to end. To be the stronger person you have to want the relationship to work out, otherwise you would just take the backseat and let the pieces fall. In "The End of Something", Nick is the weaker person in the relationship because of his body language, spoken language, and because Marjorie shows her strength in many places where Nick does not.
