In 1928 one of Pop Arts most famous painters was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. His name is Andy Warhol or as it says on his birth certificate Andrew Warhola he was born to two Czechoslovak immigrants. Like many other artist Andy showed early talent in drawing and painting. He also took Saturday morning classes at Carnegie Institute where he also went to college at 17. After graduating in 1949, Warhol moved to New York City to become a professional illustrator. That is where his drawings started becoming used in magazines and newspapers. This is where he painted the widely know Campbell's Soup Can and Coke bottles. Even thought he had much success he didn't want to be recognized as a commercial artist but a painter. This time is where Warhol first came up with the silkscreen idea where you take one picture and repeat it on one canvas. In the 1960's Warhol became known as a Pop Artist where he painted famous people, places, and everyday objects. Warhol's studio was more like a hangout for people instead of a workplace. Instead of Warhol getting distracted from the noise and the clutter of people it inspired his drawings. In addition to painting, Warhol made several 16mm films one of which was called Sleep and it showed a man sleeping for six hours. One night in his studio in 1968, Warhol was shot and hurt by a visitor; she was the leader and sole member of SCUM (Society for Cutting Up Men). After recovering from his experience Warhol decided switch to a safer crowd. In 1969 he created Interview magazines which started off as a celebrity journal but led him to meet many celebrities and take photographs of them. From then on Warhol lived a simple life painting pictures for people and getting commission and he like to experiment with different photographic sources. At the end of his career Warhol had a series on MTV called "Andy Warhol's Fifteen Minutes" and "Andy Warhol TV." Andy Warhol died February 22, 1987 as a result of complications following gall bladder surgery but he will always be one of the founding fathers of Pop Art. He depicted everything from Campbell's Soup Cans to many celebrities.
