Coming to America
The United States was founded and settled by immigrants. Many immigrants, such as eastern European Jews and southern Italians came to America to escape war, poverty, famine, or religious persecution. Many also chose to immigrate to realize the opportunities and promises America held. Two such groups were the Italians and the Jews immigrants. I will explain some of the struggles these two groups of immigrants coming to America and compare them to immigrants in 1965.
Brief History of Immigration from 1880 to 1964
Before beginning my report, I will give a brief history of the immigration from 1880 to 1965. Up until the 1880's, most immigrants to the United States had come from western or northern Europe. Beginning in about 1890, however, a second great wave of immigration began, mainly from southern and eastern Europe. The new immigrants included Italians, Slavs, Greeks, and eastern European Jews.
