Summary: A formal interpretation of two paintings by 1940s abstract artist Jackson Pollock: Mural 1943/44, and Blue Poles. The interpretation compares the two paintings with regard to line work; shape; texture; color; movement, surface composition, and tonal structure; style, and technique.

Paul Jackson Pollock was born January 28, 1912 in Cody, USA and he had four siblings. As a boy he was said to have a decisive, serious personality. As he grew older he developed a drinking problem and eventually became a severe alcoholic. He visited several psychiatric clinics to treat his problem with alcoholism, but it was the alcohol that eventually led to his death. In 1956 he died in an accident as a result of drinking; he smashed his car into a tree. One of the two passengers in his car also died. His life was depressing, filled with alcoholism, domestic problems and he was basically a slob wasting away. However, he did have some things going for him; his priceless art. Kirk Varnedoe was a fan of his art.
