Charlemagne (Charles the great) goes by the following names, Charlemagne of course, Charles, and in Latin, Carolus Magnus. He was of German blood and speech.
Charlemagne was born on April 2, 742 in Northern Europe. He was the eldest son of the Frankish leader, Pepin the short who had the title of mayor of the palace under the Merovingian Dynasty of Frankish kings. However, the Merovingian Kings became increasingly weak one after another, so Pepin decided to leave this lesser title of Mayor to assume kingship of the Franks in 751.
