SYNOPSIS
The nineteenth-century immigrant to Australia was mostly of European decent, working class and hungry for a new start in life. Migrants were predominantly from the British Isles, Germany and China and were attracted to the cheap land offered in the new colony and the prospect of better work. The gold rush era brought a great mix of migrants. Many were characterized as working class labourers, farm people or middle class with skilled occupations and trades. Women in the first part of the century were especially enticed to Australia to become wives and household employees. At their core, the majority of these immigrants possessed a will to survive hardship. Their adaptability skills to a new environment and willingness to work hard, helped start Australia...
