Although political, economic and social issues have changed over time, the foundational roles of the political spectrum have not. Located on the far left side of the political spectrum are the radical ideals and on the far right side of the spectrum are the reactionary ideals; these two groups are extremists and want to take drastic measures in their ideas with little or no compromise. Radicals aim for a fundamental change in government and society. Reactionaries want to hold onto ideals from the past, live and govern a very reserved society. Located left of center are liberal ideals; liberals want to change and modernize the government but not change governmental systems altogether. Right of center, lies conservative beliefs; conservatives want very little change and have a very reserved government and way of life.
