The patriot act contains many controversial provisions. It is important to outline the sections of the utmost consequences. Section 215 gives the government rights to search your third-party record holders (video rentals, library, travel, church) as long as the government states that it is trying to protect against terrorism. Section 218 allows secret searches to take place without public knowledge or the knowledge of the Department of Justice; as long as the government can claim there are any foreign intelligence issues involved. Section 213 allows for secret searches of your property without notice; previously police had to announce their reason and intent for search. With this section they can simply search without notice as long as "foreign powers or their agents" are suspected of terrorism.
