Summary: Examines the impact of religion in colonial North America, focusing on each region individually. Describes how the Northern Colonies were founded on Puritanism, and the Southern colonies on the Church of England, while the Middle Colonies were founded on no single religion, but the idea of religious tolerance.
Founded on the search for religious freedoms, America served as a home to many diverse peoples. Many areas were inhabited by several groups of people, who learned to tolerate religious differences. The Northern Colonies were founded on Puritanism, and the Southern colonies on the Church of England, while the Middle Colonies were founded on no single religion, but the idea of religious tolerance.

New England was first colonized by the Pilgrims in 1620. After Martin Luther openly criticized the Church of England for what he considered to be it's flaws, other people began considering the lack of efficacy of the church, too. The English people who strong felt the need to purify the Anglican Church were named the Puritans. Within, this group, there were two subgroups.
