The Idea of Tradition Resulting in the Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet
In the tragic tale of Romeo and Juliet, one would often place the blame solely on the parents of the two fighting families. However, I believe that the fault lies not directly in their hands, but in the arms of tradition and those who uphold it. No single person can be blamed since we do not know the route of the dispute, the only thing that is relevant to the double tragedy is the fact that the grudges were held, and that the tradition of opposition between the two families continued. Also, without the tradition of arranged marriages Paris would not even be in the picture, therefore avoiding the sequence of events following their wedding day. In addition, Romeo's need for vengeance over Benvolio's death is the only reason that he was sent away, setting the entire spectacle in motion.
