Robert Frost explores the forgiveness of literature throughout his poem "Acquainted with the Night." The narrator seeks to truly repent his past, yet this is certainly made harder as he is "unwilling to explain." He has travelled near the "saddest city lane" and now wishes to reach "unearthly heights."
It is clear, after understanding the first line that the speaker is well "acquainted with the night", he is familiar with the underworld. The world of the earth's scum, which the majority of the world's populace simply do not know of, or ignore. In the past he has "outwalked the furthest city lights" of civilisation purely to get away from his conflicts and seek refuge in the sanctity of nature. The "city" can be seen as the hectic situations of modern life and the root of the speakers problems, though the "lights" may be those of God.
