Summary: Explores the theme of racism in the book Passing by Larsen. Discusses the many different forms of racism which can be found in the book. Examines the possibility of being racist towards not only a different ethnic group, but also within your own ethnic group.
Throughout this book, there are many instances in which racism plays a hugely great big role. The many types of racisms can be summed up as racism toward another group, there can be racism among the same group, and then there can be just towards another social class. The type of racism that is going to be explored is that there can be racism among the same ethnic group. In the book, there are many instances of this happening.
Throughout the book we see many instances of there being racism in the same ethnic group, on the basis of social status, or a different tone of skin color. An instance of this in the book would be when Irene, Clare, and Gertrude meet, and they are talking about each others children, and how nobody wants a dark child, even though they are partially black.
