Flowers, a Short Story Review

Summary: Reviews the short story Flowers, written by Robin Jenkins. After giving a brief account of the story, discusses to what extent interest and enjoyment was brought about by features such as characterization, setting, vivid imagery, and plot structure.
The story "Flowers" was written by Robin Jenkins and is about a young girl who is an evacuee in World War 2. The title "Flowers" makes us think the story is going to be a pleasant one; we find this is misleading toward the end of the tale. At the start of the passage we are introduced to Margaret the main character of our tale and her teacher in the classroom of her new school. At the beginning of the story we are told of the fighter jets flying over- head and Miss Laing's admiration for the pilots. We also obtain some idea of Margaret's discontent and unhappiness. Margaret seems to be a very precocious young girl, especially in the way she acts. She sneers at one of her peer's legs and dismisses their Gaelic accent, as she is not used to seeing boys in kilts or the Gaelic...
