Wommera, the Evolution of a Village
A joint project created between Britain and Australia on April 1st, 1947 saw the birth of Woomera, 468kms north of Adelaide. An initiative of the Australian Department of Defence after World War II, was to find a large remote area to test weapons and rockets, which gave rise to the Woomera Rocket Range, and hence the support village of Woomera. The Department of Defence has continued to support and invest into the Woomera community, which has developed into a remote well-maintained and serviced township.
In 1949 the first missile was launched and the site proceeded to become a world leader in scientific and engineering activity. This facility created employment for many army, navy and airforce personnel, as well as civilians.
