Matisse and His Style

Summary: Evaluates a Henri Matisse painting, The Codomas. Comments on Matisse's style and his use of imagery in the painting.
Being known as one of the most important French painters of the 20th century holds great character and talent. Through the Fauvist movement of 1900, his skills and vision have assisted him in grasping a different view of artwork. Much of his work has revolved around Impressionism and Abstraction. His use of colors and shapes distinguish Matisse from other artists during his time. One of his famous pieces includes "The Knife Thrower." The subject matter of the painting seems to be of an odd shaped woman figure with their hands straight up. In my opinion, the focal point of the painting is the "sharp" red figure to the far left of the painting. Because of the style and formulation of the artwork created by Matisse, the figure doesn't seem to be wearing any clothing. Also, there is only one humanly figure pertained within the unusual painting. In addition, since the painting doesn't contain a landscape or scene, there isn't a horizon line or golden section from my point of view. As for the shapes, they all have curves and don't look like regular shapes in ordinary paintings. Each figure or object has curves and waves within its structure that helps make the painting be a recognizable work of art created by Henry Matisse.

The sharp figure to the right seems to lure my eye through its shape to more of the center of the painting. Furthermore, the various shapes surrounding the large objects make the eye move around leading it to the larger figures. There seems to be about 5 to 6 different colors used respectively. In other words, there isn't an excess of one color used in the painting. The tone is subtle since there aren't defecations between foreground and background because it isn't much of a scene than it is an imaginary visual. Also, the mood seems to be neutral since there isn't that distinct of an emotion within it. The style is one that has no realistic figures in relation to how it is in the real world. Overall, I like the style Matisse has, as well as his choice of imagery within his paintings. I especially like that there isn't a sense of emotion and tone, leaving the end result to be determined by the visual interrupter.
