Like other societies around the world today, Muslim societies are very patriarchal. In fact, Islam is now the greatest stronghold of patriarchy. Gender separations begin from early adolescents. By Islamic law, the men always have authority in the home in order to uphold harmony in society.
In Muslim countries, their religion dictates the rules by which their whole life in governed. Islam is a very flexible religion, and each Muslim society is characterised by its distinctive set of customs. Many upper and middle class Muslims living in cities have modernised their laws to suit their surroundings. In rural areas, more traditional laws are followed. There are many countries that are labelled Islamic countries, but the Islamic religion has made its way around the world. Women are severely disadvantaged in most Islamic societies.
