Developing Colonial Societies in the Chesapeake Region
Summary: Relates the societies developed in New England and the Chesapeake region during the 17th Century using primary source documents. Describes many factors that contribute to the eventual success or failure of a colonial establishment. Concludes that the structure of a society is determined by the moral values and personal goals of the people within it.
When a colony is established, many factors determine the type of society formed within the colony. The type of colony that develops is dependant first upon the founders' goals for the colony. Other determinants include the reasons people are drawn to emigrate, and the types of people that inhabit the colony. The goals and dreams of these people are what determine the type of society that will be established in an attempt to achieve those dreams. While there are many factors that contribute to the eventual success or failure of a colonial establishment, it is known that one man cannot survive and prosper in an untamed frontier without the cooperation of others. While the people that populated New England and the Chesapeake region all came from Europe as English persons, their reasons for travel to the new world determined the different types of societies they developed.
