The children play at war because the story took place during World War II. They go on saying that children can kill imaginary enemies just as well as the adults can kill real enemies. Children during this time would stay home and play as if they were at war. The children did not have toys to play with, so they would imagine and invent something to do. The children would use anything around them to play and imagine what was going on in the real world.
The tone of this story is an exciting one. The children would imagine being at war. They would imagine being ace pilots and soldiers at war. This was fun and amusing for them.
