The Power of Myth, A Comparision Study
The Iroquois and the Jews both have creation myths that show how they think the world came to be. There is "The World on a Turtle's Back" (TWTB) for the Iroquois and Genesis for the Jews. These two myths have different interpretations on similar aspects such as the creation of the earth, ways of thinking and higher powers.
Both Genesis and "TWTB" agree that the earth was created; however, they do not agree on how and why. The Iroquois believe that the earth was created when a pregnant woman accidentally fell from the sky onto a turtle's back and walked around a small clod of dirt brought from the bottom of the sea. The Jews on the other hand, believe that the earth used to be empty and without form. God made the earth...
