Eudora Welty brings life to her story with intense diction. She carefully chooses her words to create a strong purpose. Throughout the telling of her vivid experience, she shows us her passion for reading and talks about the roles of the characters that influenced her life.
One main character she brings into reality is her childhood librarian, Mrs. Calloway. She explains the austere authoritarian like she is the main antagonist of her autobiography. Welty brings light to this intimidating character by saying that she "never knew anyone who'd grown up without being afraid of Mrs. Calloway." It was said to be that "[Mrs. Calloway] ran the Library absolutely by herself, [with her dragon eye on the front door.]" This type of word use accentuates her feelings toward the reality of the people in her world.
