Violence in Lord of the Flies and America

Summary: Discusses William Golding's novel, Lord of the Flies. Compares the violence among the boys on Golding's fictional island with violence among modern day youth. Relates reasons behind the violence in both cases.
Why is there so much violence among the youth of America today? In three separate school shootings, one committed by thirteen year old Mitchell Johnson and eleven year old Andrew Golden, both from Arkansas; another by Michael Carneal, a fourteen year old from Kentucky; and a third done by sixteen year old Luke Woodham from Mississippi. These kids entered their school and randomly began firing to kill. What caused these students to become so evil, frenzied and willing to kill other people? In most of these incidents, the student was extremely vulnerable to a lack of love and attention from the family and/or peers. The absence of respect and the presence of derision from other students caused these boys to "snap" or become demented and take out their anger by killing.
