Volumetric Analysis of Cloudy Ammonia
Aim
To perform a volumetric analysis on a 20mL sample of cloudy ammonia with a claim of 50 g/L ammonia as NH4OH.
Introduction
Volumetric analysis is a type of quantitative analysis that involves reactions in solution. In this experiment, the concentration of the base solution can be determined by slowly adding it with a primary standard acid solution, until both the solutions have completely reacted. This process is known as titration.
As this experiment involves volume and concentration, it is vital that the performer of this experiment should be familiar with the mole concept, mass-mass and volume-concentration stoichiometry. Since it is also an acid-base reaction, it should also be known that when sufficient amount of acid is added to the base, neutralization occurs.
Neutralization is a chemical reaction in which an acid reacts with a base to form a salt and water...
