Over time representations of women in art have changed dramatically. The traditional image of the female form as the muse or subject within an artwork is no longer, and women over time have gained social acceptance to be able to play the role of artist as well as muse. Although this freedom has come only in recent years, particularly after the feminist period, indications of art which questions the treatment of the female form has been evident in various stages throughout history. Women no longer only appear in art, they now have the freedom to act as men do, taking up the role of artist, and questioning how audiences view women through their art.
One such artist, Cindy Sherman has challenged these traditional roles by placing herself in photographs that depict women stereotypes in positions of vulnerability, showing weakness, sexual naivety and various other faults. In her work...
