William Golding's Lord of the Flies is about shipwrecked young boys, stranded on an island, trying to survive by themselves, with no adults around. The main theme is the conflict between the instinct to live peacefully by the rules and to obtain domination over others by acting violently. In the book Golding has associated the instincts of both good and evil and writes about civilization vs. savagery. Jack's group is created more by fear and need of protection while Ralph's group contains members who are either too young to know what's going on or are supportive of rules and civilization. Fear controls a human being into seeking safety from a group rather than standing outside and alone, doing what feels correct.
