When bacterium is put into a petri dish, they continue to live and prosper as long as there are resources available to keep them alive. When bacteria run out of resources, their population collapses, yet they will have no idea that they are starving to death until it is too late. Much like bacteria in a petri dish, humans are expected to die out in exponential numbers within this generation because of the tremendous dependence on one particular resource, oil. Humans use oil for all sorts of purposes, not only for operating our machinery, but refrigeration, food production, medicine, water control, and much more, are reliant on the presence of oil in order to operate.
