In many films, references are made to other films or books, in order to enhance the meaning of the plot, characters and setting. By 'borrowing' substance from other texts, parallels are recognised and the film can get a great amount of meaning from a small part of dialogue or a short scene. Intertextual references are used to add meaning to the plot, the issues that arise from it, characters and the settings in the feature film The Matrix, directed by the Wachowski Brothers. In this film, the main character, Neo, discovers that the world he has lived in all his life was a computer controlled virtual reality ruled by artificial intelligence. To give the notion of going away from normal 'reality,' references are made to Alice in Wonderland and The Wizard of Oz, which contain fantastic, imaginary worlds.
