A Comparison Between Today's Society and Ancient Roman Culture
Summary: Compares and contrasts today's society to that of ancient Rome, using examples from Petronious's "The Satyricon".
While in the course of reading Petronious's "The Satyricon", I began to recognize that our present day culture here in the United States sounded somewhat similar to that of the Ancient Romans in terms of cultural traits. A male centered society, the value of an education, the love of material wealth and a division of social classes are some of the cultural traits that came to mind while reading this assignment. Some of these traits are not as evident in our present culture as in the Ancient Roman times, but they are still evident to a degree.
The Ancient Roman culture had all the appearances of being considered a patriarchal society in my opinion. Therefore, the men during that time controlled the family and made all the decisions. This meant the women of Ancient Rome were given very little authority if they were given any authority at all...
