John Simpson Kirkpatrick, also known as "The Man And His Donkey", is an Australian legend. His courage, bravery and good humour in rough times represent the best characteristics of Australians. He will always be remembered as one of the greatest ANZACS that ever lived, and his acts of bravery is what the ANZAC spirit is really all about.
John Simpson Kirkpatrick was born on the 6th of July, 1892, in South Shields, England. His parents were Robert and Sarah Kirkpatrick and they were of Scottish background. He came from a large family and was one of eight children. Simpson grew up in a happy home, and lots of his work was around animals. His schooling life was minimal and was incomplete, but in those days, school wasn't essential for developing a satisfactory career.
