Alex is the protagonist in the novel "Forbidden City" by William Bell. The historical fiction novel is based on the Tiananmen Massacre in Beijing, China on the 4th of June. A larger number of university students were protesting for peace and democracy when the Chinese Army forcefully removed the students from the square by military means. Due to the Tiananmen Massacre, Alex is forced to go through character changes. Alex has to watch some of his close friends die, he is hit with the reality of the way armies really function and he realises the world isn't perfect and its more than just a game: "I guess it was all a game to me too, Dad...It isn't anymore" (274).
