The Great Apollo
The Ancient Greek Gods appear in many mythological tragedies. Oedipus the King, written by Sophocles, is one of these tragedies. This play is about a man destined to kill his father, marry his mother, and be severely punished for it. The god that appears in this play is Apollo; the god of light, the sun, health, disease, and music. Although he's not actually a character in the play, Apollo plays a major role because he is the source of the prophecies, all of the characters look to him for guidance, and he serves the punishment to Oedipus.
Apollo is the source of the prophecies given to the characters. He gives Oedipus the prophecy that he is destined to kill his father and marry his mother. Oedipus discusses his experience at the oracle at Delphi, "Apollo...-packs me home again, my ears ringing/ with some other things he blurted...
