Odysseus: Qualities of a Hero
Summary: In the epic poem, "The Odyssey" by Homer, many characteristics of the epic hero, Odysseus, were revealed throughout the story.
Most of his qualities were shown when he was faced with the Cyclops, Polyphemus. In this episode, Odysseus' actions distinguished his characteristics as he attended to the dangerous situation. He was brave, intelligent, and expressed much leadership. These qualities are all instances of heroism. His characteristics reflect on the ancient Greek civilization better than any man, or hero could have done.
Odysseus' bravery was a key role in his survival and that of his companions'. Odysseus demonstrated many instances of heroism. His sheer courage was not only helpful to his survival, but also helpful in his journey to his homeland, Ithaca. His audacity began before he even encountered Polyphemus the towering one-eyed giant. When he and his men were exploring the island of the Cyclops, they discovered cheese and shelter in a giant cave. The cave appeared to them as being inhabited by a massive being. Odysseus' men...
