Separation of Singapore and Malaysia
Singapore separated from Malaysia in 1965 due to political, economic and social reasons. Both parties had different reasons for merger and expectations of it.
Firstly, PAP and UMNO have different ideologies - PAP was for non-communal politics while UMNO was for communal politics. In the 1963 Singapore General Election, SUMNO did not win any seats and this proved that Singaporean Malays were not interested in communal politics. But when PAP won one seat in the 1964 Federal Elections, this alarmed the UMNO as given time the PAP would probably be able to make Malays in Malaya waver from communal politics.
