Hamlet as a Director
Summary: Essay illustrates the position I would adopt by indicating how I would direct Act 1, Scene 5 of "Hamlet."
The position I would take if I were to direct Act 1, scene 5 of Hamlet would be to re-interpret the script to make it relevant to a contemporary audience. The main change that would be made would be that it would be set in the 21st century. Meaning, the clothing and set would be modern. It may sound similar to the Romeo and Juliet remake but this was a very effective representation of Shakespeare's work. But I think this would also work for Hamlet. It would be set in a bar, where Hamlet would have walked in there `to drown the sorrows' of his fathers death but more importantly he is intrigued by the guards suggestion of a ghost sighting. It would have to be his favorite (V.I.P) bar. They would obviously still be guards but in a modern sense. For example security guards, dressed in black...
