There is more to the Winter Olympics than just sport competitions. 89% of people that watch the Winter Games don't know a lot about them. While some skating events were included in the 1908 and 1920 Summer Olympics, the Winter Games were accepted as a celebration like the Summer Games and given the official blessing of the IOC in 1924. The 1st Winter Olympics were held at Chamonix, France and consisted of 16 events. There were 16 participating countries and the athletes numbered less than 300. At the Olympic Games the athletes have to take an oath during the opening ceremonies. The athletes promise not to cheat and to compete for the glory of the sport. The tradition of the Olympic flame began during the ancient Olympic Games, over 2700 years ago in Greece. The flame symbolized the death and rebirth of Greek heroes.
