Summary: Essay discusses the use of stem cells to cure heart disease.
Curing heart disease, repairing the brain after a stroke, rebuilding injured muscles are all worthy aims. But are they possible? Well yes they are all very possible with the use of stem cells, but since so many people are against it, it might never get the sufficient funding it will need. What doesn't help is that federal law prohibits the use of public funding for any research that harms a human embryo. While a number of very insightful experiments have been conducted with mammal embryonic stem cells, clinical research will ultimately require the use of human embryonic stem cells. However, ethical issues linked to the production of human embryonic stem cell solely for research purposes pose a challenge to policy makers.
