Fifty- three Americans were held hostage for four hundred and forty-four days at the U.S. Embassy in Tehran, Iran. The Iran Hostage Crisis was a volatile situation between two nations half way around the world. Revolution swept Iran as the former Iranian King Reza Shah Pahlavi was forced into exile by the people of Iran. The United States supported the former King, and when Pahlavi appeared at the United States' door for refuge, a tight situation formed rather quickly. The United States discovered Pahlavi's cancer and made a daring decision to let him in for treatment. The people of Iran were furious, and Iranian students protested outside of the embassy.
