Summary: Scission is a complilation of short stories written by Australian writer Tim Winton. This essay deals with the relationships within the book using three of the stories as a basis.
One of Tim Winton's main themes in "Scissions" is the possibly damaging or enriching effect of relationships with others. These effects concern the way we behave and our attitudes towards society and future relationships. In the story "Neighbours", Winton portrays how enriching relationships can be with others as a result of an increased acceptance of other ways of life. "Secrets" clearly shows the damaging effects of relationships, in particular the effects that can be done to a child through neglect. "My Father's Axe" is more complex in its demonstration of both the positive and negative effects that relationships can have on people.
