Zahir and Batin in Reference to Quranic Ayats
Summary: This essay relates to the Zahir and Batin interpretations of the Quran in reference to several ayats of the Quran.
In the provided handout, Allah makes reference to the zahir and batin in many ways. For example when the Quran says, "Allah is the light of the heavens and the earth." It is not meant that Allah is physically a bulb, but the Quran means, in a metaphorical way, that Allah's noor is present in the heavens and earth -- this is the deeper, and batinni, meaning. The batinni interpretation is the essence, the esoteric meaning. The zahiri is the exoteric, and superficial representation. The Quran is typically intended to be interpreted in an esoteric and batinni manner. It is for this reason that we can only understand and find truth in the Quran if we interpret it and analyze its meaning, as opposed to only comprehending the zahiri meaning.
