Unchanging Values in Changing Society

When the words "the West" are mentioned in an eastern atmosphere, people tend to think of unchanging landscapes that stretch forever into the horizon. Furthermore, it is generally the notion that the East brings about change and opportunity. The Great Gatsby tests the validity of this idea by bringing both worlds under one roof. Nick is a westerner who travels to the east looking for opportunity, and he finds himself changing to meet the society's needs. However, it would be an exaggeration to say that Nick is a dynamic character in all aspects; it would also be an exaggeration to say that Nick is a completely static character. It can be said, however, that Nick is a static character in the way he thinks, and at the same time a dynamic character in what he understands.
