The Innocence of Shabanu

In the novel, Shabanu-Daughter of the Wind, the protagonist Shabanu, goes through many life-altering experiences that aid in her growth, maturity, and subsequently cause her loss of innocence. Shabanu's innocence deteriorates, when her father sells off the family's prized camel, Guluband, to obtain enough dowry money for both Phulan and Shabanu's upcoming weddings. Secondly, Shabanu is able to grow and mature when she accepts the reality of her sister's marriage to Murad. Lastly, Shabanu's innocence was brought to an end when she sacrificed her own happiness and well-being by marrying a man five times her senior, for the happiness and security of her family.
