United Nations' Position on Sierra Leone and Their Landmines

Summary: Essay discusses the position of the United Nations on the issue of Sierra Leone and their landmines.
In many places in Africa and Europe land mines are a huge threat. This however is not the case for Sierra Leone. Although Sierra Leone has only recently ended a civil war that had been raging on for years not many land mines were used.

The United Nations (or UN) decided that a world wide correction of this devastating problem was in order. The UN banned these deadly anti personnel weapons. This was intended to correct the problem however it did not because so many land mines are already buried in the ground.

Land mines are deadly bombs that are buried in the ground awaiting a person (or soldier) unlucky enough to trigger them. There are several types, the most deadly of these are the ones that jump out of the ground and explode firing metal shavings into everything within a ten yard radius. These are deadly but...
