British Lt. General Cornwallis suffered great losses at the Battle of Guilford Courthouse, which forced him travel north towards Charleston hoping to annex Southern colonies. Militia attacks led by Thomas Sumter, Andrew Pickens and Francis Marion caused Lt. General Cornwallis's supplies to be embargoed, therefore, his only wise alternative was to journey towards Petersburg seeking reinforcements from General Clinton. This increased his army from 1,500 to 7,000. In the next few months of 1781, Cornwallis had to fend of French Marquis de Lafayette, engaging battle on the 6th of July. Next, he crossed James River establishing a fort at Old Point Comfort. Later, he ended erecting his second fort at Yorktown as he found Old Point Comfort defenceless.
