Colonel Robert Gould Shaw was a great soldier and in the civil war. Robert Gould Shaw was an actual character. His father a wealthy abolitionist from Massachusetts and he joined the regiment when the civil war began. Robert was in the battle of Antitem and was hit by shrapnel from a cannon that that had been shot at the union soldiers. He was hit and many more cannons were shot his way and knocked him unconscious. After wards when he woke up he found out that he was the only union soldier alive. There was a big celebration and everyone congratulated him. His father was very proud of him and he was asked if he wanted to lead an all black regiment, he accepted. The regiment was given the name of 54th Massachusetts Regiment.
