How to "Kill" in Volleyball

A kill in volleyball is defined as the hitting of a ball with a force that makes the return impossible. So when a player sends a ball over the net and the other team cannot play it, the player is credited with a kill. However, it is not stated how hard the kill should be. Whether you smash the ball or send it softly, and the other team doesn't play it, your team can either receive a point or a side out.
